Fatima Shrine - Portugal
The Shrine of Fatima is the largest pilgrimage site in Portugal. Every year thousands of Christians from all over Portugal and Europe come here to worship Our Lady of Fatima.
The reason why the shrine was built here dedicated to the Virgin Mary is that in May 1917 she appeared to 3 shepherd children, Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia. Mary revealed 3 secrets to the children. And in October 1917, the Miracle of the Sun took place, when the Virgin Mary appeared in front of a crowd and performed miracles.
Because of these events, a Shrine was built here so that Christians could pray to the Virgin Mary.
The Shrine is quite large with a large Basilica, several Chapels, an Oak tree (where Mary appeared) and a large open space where people can pray.
About 4 million pilgrims visit the Basilica every year and because of the great abundance of pilgrims it has the title “the temple of the world”. The 13th of May is the most important date because it is the day of the apparitions and most of the pilgrims gather in the Sanctuary.
The Fatima Shrine is of great importance to Roman Catholics, especially the Portuguese. It is a peaceful and pleasant place to visit even if you are not a believer.
