Meteora, Greece
In Meteora, Greece, the ancient monasteries are perched perpendicular to the top of large rock pillars, standing gracefully and powerfully, high above the town of Kalambaka. Without a doubt, it is one of the most incredible places of spiritual significance I have ever had the privilege to visit.
Meteora's six monasteries are majestic and simply unique. The atmosphere is one of palpable awe, peace and sublimity. Leave Athens and the islands behind; a visit to this extraordinary part of the world is a must for anyone visiting Greece.
Practically, Meteora is located about 350 km North West of Athens and is easily accessible by car, bus or train. Once there, you can walk to the monasteries, take the bus or, for a fee, join one of the many tours available. A donation of €3 per person is required at the entrance to each monastery.
Meteora's history is also fascinating. As early as the 11th century, the site gained religious significance as a home for monks. However, the monasteries were not built until several hundred years later.
Construction must have seemed a daunting prospect at the time. The buildings were positioned hundreds of meters above the ground and were only accessible by rickety ladders and rope devices until steps were carved into the rock in the 1920s. Their remote location and inaccessibility provided refuge and protection for the Monks at many points throughout history.
Of course, the unfathomable location of these magnificent buildings is precisely the reason for such a profound and divine experience for any visitor.
