Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
The Hill of Crosses is located in Northern Lithuania near the town of Siauliai. This is one of the most spiritual places in Lithuania.
The Hill of Crosses (as the name suggests) is essentially a hill covered with numerous wooden crosses brought here by local Lithuanian and foreign Catholic pilgrims.
The exact number of crosses on the hill is unknown, but it is estimated to be over 200,000.
The first crosses appeared on the hill after 1890 and it was recognized as a holy place after 1900. More and more pilgrims came to visit and left their own crosses or wooden carvings of Jesus, the Virgin Mary or saints. In 1993 the Pope visited the Hill of Crosses, making it even more sacred in the eyes of Catholics around the world.
To visit the Hill of Crosses you can get to the town of Siauliai by car, bus or train. From Siauliai it is a short (12 km) journey to the hill. You can also take a guided tour with transportation from Siauliai or any major city in Lithuania.
