Uluru
Uluru is one of Australia's most iconic landmarks. The largest monolith in the world, it sits at the end of the Lasseter Highway (so famous that a highway was built just for it!) and is a must-visit on a trip through Australia's Red Center.
To visit, you'll want to stay in Yulara, the town built for Uluru's tourism. Ayers Rock Resort has hotels, a campground and a hostel. The entrance fee to Uluru/Katja Tutja National Park is $25 for a valid three-day pass.
When you visit, remember what a special place this is for Indigenous Australians. It is a very spiritual place for them. Aboriginal culture worships natural formations rather than man-made structures - and for thousands of years it has been the focal point of local Indigenous life.
Ceremonies have been held around Uluru, it has provided shelter, and indigenous Australians have used the vegetation and animals around the rock as food for thousands of years. One thing Indigenous people never did was climb it - so tourists shouldn't either.
